Independent schools are 鈥渋ndependent鈥 because they have distinct educational missions, are independently governed or managed, and are supported by tuition payments, charitable contributions or endowment revenue rather than by public taxes. In addition, there are various inspection and accreditation bodies that schools may be members of or affiliated with.
